Podcasting Television April 28, 2006

I thought to myself recently "why don't more TV shows integrate with podcasting? Wouldn't it be cool if episodes could be touched up for presentation as audio-only podcasts?" Well, I looked around the 'Net and was able to find several places where this was happening. (new windows)

The Pittsburgh Channel

FOXCAST

The NewsHour

CBS News (not strictly tv)
Although podcasting has taken off as a hobby, it is still a nascent industry. These companies are far ahead of the curve, and whether that will pay off [big] has yet to be seen. At the very least podcasting is bound to become one more way for consumers to digest content. Despite podcastings drawbacks as a more technical and obscure niche, it has an inherent over radio–it exists online. There is no radio network to limit content. This makes finding advertisers and sponsors somewhat difficult (assuming a podcaster can even muster a large audience), but it also gives the consumer a greater variety of choices. People, if they are so inclined, can listen to what they want when they want.

Lots of artists and bands, lots of good commentary, but still plenty of room for more. For those bored with the traditional fly-by-night lyrics sites SongMeanings.Net provides a more holistic experience by combining lyrics and fan comments. Someone wants to get flipped.

Well, actually, Magnatunes gets rebranded…slightly. Considering that the point of the brrreeeport phenomenon is to generate more traffic to Z-listers like myself, I’m not too far off the mark when I compare Magnatune’s recent homepage alteration to the attempts of bloggers who have been inspired (or depressed) by Scoble’s advice on making your blog more attractive to readers.Read more about Magnatune rebranding here: [http://blogs.magnatune.com/buckman/2006/02/why_do_63_of_ou.html]

Songbird; first impressions February 11, 2006

The trumpeted “Firefox of Music Players” isn’t much yet, but it’s too early to tell what Songbird will grow to become. The hype is all over the blogosphere. Songbird version 0.1, the public preview release, is finally out. Everyone who thinks they are anyone has already downloaded a copy and spent hours fiddling with it. Songbird has an impressive heritage–an entrepreneurial, opensource venture based largely upon a combination of popular VideoLan and Firefox software. Creating a true “music browser” and all-in-one rival to kingpin iTunes is no mean feat.

But it isn’t there yet.

Songbird promises cross-platform functioning, extensibility, and customization of every possible aspect. These things have yet to be delivered, and as planned features roll out so too will the red carpet. For your average user, non-developer, I-just-want-my-tunes consumer…for that guy Songbird is just too complex and lacking all of the promised pizazz. My advice: use iTunes, WinAmp, VLC, whatever you are comfortable with for now. Don’t bother with Songbird unless you have an interest in the code. In 6 months or less Songbird might live up to the aspirations of developers and the dreams of savvy music fans. For now, it’s just a large pointless piece of software with some nice affiliate links.
