Google is Officially Evil May 1, 2006

New Microsoft Browser Raises Google's Hackles (NY Times)

"The new browser includes a search box in the upper-right corner that is typically set up to send users to Microsoft's MSN search service. Google contends that this puts Microsoft in a position to unfairly grab Web traffic and advertising dollars from its competitors."

So Google does the exact same thing in with Firefox and Safari, and it's ok then? What hypocrisy. MSN is fighting an uphill battle to overcome Google's massive headstart in branding and search development and Google chooses to respond's with preemptive lobbying. Where is the user in this debate? Where is the commitment to fair competition and pushing the limits of technology? The truth is that Google would just as soon not have millions of people realize that other search engines besides itself exist.

Podcasting Television April 28, 2006

I thought to myself recently "why don't more TV shows integrate with podcasting? Wouldn't it be cool if episodes could be touched up for presentation as audio-only podcasts?" Well, I looked around the 'Net and was able to find several places where this was happening. (new windows)

The Pittsburgh Channel

FOXCAST

The NewsHour

CBS News (not strictly tv)
Although podcasting has taken off as a hobby, it is still a nascent industry. These companies are far ahead of the curve, and whether that will pay off [big] has yet to be seen. At the very least podcasting is bound to become one more way for consumers to digest content. Despite podcastings drawbacks as a more technical and obscure niche, it has an inherent over radio–it exists online. There is no radio network to limit content. This makes finding advertisers and sponsors somewhat difficult (assuming a podcaster can even muster a large audience), but it also gives the consumer a greater variety of choices. People, if they are so inclined, can listen to what they want when they want.

Addicted to Web 2.0? April 13, 2006

Then you belong at BuzzShout. Get all the latest "buzz" on a tagged plethora of current Web 2.0 websites and services. Registered users can submit sites for review, comment on any number of sites that they are familiar with, and moderate comments up and down. If you prefer leeching, the search feature is open to all.

BuzzShout's only major flaw is that there does not seem to be any way to edit the basic profile of a submitted site. This is especially irritating when you consider the lack of a spell-check. All in all though, probably the most efficient way to read and distribute opinions on Web 2 companies. (compared to the comments section at TechCrunch or the numerous lists on Listible)

Tech versus Technology April 8, 2006

Whenever a flat folksonomy is used, problems are bound to ensue. A common complaint of taxonomies like del.icio.us (from now on referred to as “D”) is the use of synonyms to describe the same term. Looking at the two popular tags tech and technology, I wondered “is there room for both?”

A Brief Analysis

(page view shows 100 items)

Tech
timeliness: 1 minute to 3 hours ago
related tags: technology, blog, news, web, blogs, computer, mac, daily, geek, software, reference

Technology
timeliness: 12 minutes to 1 hour ago
related tags: news, blog, software, tech, web, web2.0, video, internet, computer, blogs, security

One minor deducemnt: Technology has closer links to the Web 2.0 tred with the tags blog, web2.0, and blogs (internet and web are borderline words as they tend to describe much broader concepts). Also, it is notable that in many cases both tags are being used, probably as a result of sloppy tagging or auto-tagging techniques.

I prefer to use neither of these tags as I find them too vague. Almost everything that I bookmark could be tagged as technology related.

Comments Welcome :)

I've looked and looked for a way to recieve updates of when new products are entered into a Froogle search query. Is the Froogle team ever going to develop an Alert system in the same manner as News and Web?
